Player Projection: Omri Casspi

by Jon Nichols

Recently I added Euroleague statistics to my Box Score Prediction System (explanation here: http://basketball-statistics.com/explanationoftheboxscorepredictionsystem.html).  Today I’m going to do my first projection of an international prospect.

Omri Casspi plays for a talented Maccabi Tel Aviv squad that features NBA names such as Carlos Arroyo, Dee Brown, and Rodney White.  He’s got good size (6’8 and 225 pounds) for someone who possesses the skills he does.  He’s a good shooter who can also pass and handle the ball.  He even has experience playing the point guard position.

NBADraft.net says his NBA comparison is Hedo Turkoglu.  There are some questions about his attitude, but he’s certainly got the talent and confidence to be an NBA player.  What does BSPS think of his potential NBA career?  Let’s take a look at his projected box score per 36 minutes:

Omri Casspi Box Score

As you can see from the box score above, despite his potential, my Box Score Prediction System doesn’t project Casspi to be much of an NBA player.  His shooting percentages are too low for him to be efficient on offense.  In addition, his rebounding is decent but not enough to earn a spot on an NBA team.  Also, his foul rate looks to be extraordinarily high.

This is not a death sentence for Casspi’s NBA career.  This just says that based on his Euroleague performance, he doesn’t look like an NBA player.  He’s had some success in Under-18 competitions, but so far he’s been quite ordinary in Euroleague competition.  A team will probably take a risk on him late in the first round or some time in the second round and just wait and see how he progresses.
